Buzzards Gather At Hermann Sons Nov. 10
If two strikes in a row is a double, and three a turkey, what is three splits in a row?
Simple!
It's a buzzard, and If you're one of those keglers who is plagued by
leaves that resemble a football players' bridgework, despair no longer
- there's now - an organization for you! It's called -appropriately
enough - the Buzzard Club, and the San Antonio chapter celebrates its
first anniversary this December.
Some of you are familiar with the group. You probably were, first
introduced in Houston at one of that city's many tournaments, by the
originator of the idea - a man whose name I can't remember but whose
personality no one can forget, If you've ever met him, you know what I
mean, and if you haven't I couldn't explain it anyway. The Buzzard Club
is for all those bowlers who have taken dead aim, fired away at the
pocket, and watched as a split stood each time for three consecutive
frames in league play.
That's all the qualifying there is. From there you either pick up a
membership application, or contact the local secretary at ED3-3892, pay
your $2.50 initiation fee which entitles you to a membership card and a
Buzzard patch, and you're ready to join the fun for which the club is
becoming famous.
And they do have fun. When Buzzards gather -they don't meet -all the
standard rules of bowling go out the window. Prizes are awarded to the
men and women with the most splits in a three -game series at the
gathering, to the high series scratch series and from Fri- series and
the high handicap series.
The fees at the gathering are reasonable -the cost of lines of bowling
($1.65 at most San Antonio houses), $1 dues (this is deposited in a
bank to be used by the club for supplies, charities or tournaments), $1
for the prize fund, and $0.20 for the secretary -treasurer's fee. This
comes to $3.85, and you'll be hard put to find cheaper entertainment
for a few hours anywhere.
Buzzards gather on the second Sunday of each month at 2 p.m., at a
place designated in a newsletter sent to each member each month. The
November meeting is on the eleventh, at Hermann Sons, 535 S. St.
Mary's. For San Antonio's first anniversary celebration the Buzzards
will gather at Brunswick Bowl for a singles and doubles tournament, and
fun and refreshments are guaranteed.
San Antonio is one of five with the running of the local group. There
is one other connection a tournament held each May for all Buzzards
everywhere, at which a beautiful trophy is awarded along with cash
prizes. Officers in the local group are Pres. Bobbie Gilbert, Vice
pres. Russell Beanland, Secy. Treas. Dotty Mazzola, and Sgt. - at
Arms Hiram Walker, and the phone number is ED3-3892.
Perhaps the club?s motto best expresses it's aims, and it is one every bowler should remember.
"Let there be no strangers in the Buzzard Club . . . Only Friends that have yet to meet."
