BUZZARD CLUB OF AMERICA
HOUSTON CHAPTER NEWSLETTER
MAY 2009 VOLUME 48 ISSUE 5

FOUNDED OCT 1961- ORGANIZED MAY 1963 FOUNDER - THOMAS E. WALTERS, JR
CHIEF BUZZARD ARLEN DEASON

"Let there be no strangers in the BUZZARD CLUB - Only friends that have yet to meet"

Hello Fellow Buzzards: I don’t have a lot to discuss this month so I’ll keep it short. I would like to remind everyone it’s that time again for the annual tournament so start getting your teams together. That’s really it for this month, so on with bowling!!!

Minutes of Meeting: Dennis opened the meeting and presented the treasurer’s report which passed. Six new member applications were voted on and also passed. Dennis went over the upcoming tournaments. He also informed the club that the prolems with last years tournament in Montgomery County will be corrected and all differences will be mailed. Dennis went over the tournament information for our Annual Tournament in Arkansas and informed the club the applications were here and they were available for teams to fill in. Nothing else was brought up so the meeting was adjourned.

Attendance: We had 57 Buzzards at the gathering in April, five that did not bowl and one pacer. Our next scheduled gathering is on May 3rd @ Copperfield Bowl 15615 Glen Chase Dr. Houston (281) 550-8710. The meeting begins at 1 PM and bowling begins at 2 PM.

Bowling Reminder: There are only two balls per lane during warm-up and not 10 minutes. First and last names of bowlers are to be put on the re-cap sheets each month. Also, make sure the total number of splits and your games are totaled before you sign the sheet at the end of bowling. If you re-qualify, please make a note on the re-cap sheet and you can receive a Buzzard pin for $ 2.00 and be entered for “THE ELLIE DEASON MEMORIAL THREE – IN – A- ROW “roll-off in January. Don’t forget, if you show up to bowl in your birthday month, you pay only $6..

Stupid State Laws
In Florida - The law states that if an elephant is tied to a parking meter, it must pay the same fees as a car.

Who Could It Be?
When he graduated from high school in 1917, he chose journalism instead of college and spent seven months as a newspaper reporter. While driving a Red Cross ambulance in Italy in 1918 he was severely wounded by shrapnel.

Note from Jackie: Only three team applications were taken. Our next meeting in May will be the last time you can pick one up. All applications need to be returned to Gayle and me no later than the June 7th meeting. All money for the tournament and dinner/dance are to be attached. Have your team application filled out completely with correct names, no nicknames. Team Captains are to make sure all is complete on entry form. Also fill out the dinner/dance form with names of each person, including guests. I must have these in by June 7th although it would be best if I receive them sooner. June 15th is the deadline for me to have these arrive in Arkansas so that means I need to get them sent not later than the 10th of June. Those that already have the applications, try to return them to us at the May 3 rd meeting. Call me if I can mail you an application now or come to the Del Mar Lanes any Thursday between 11:30 AM and 2:45 PM and I will have some with me. You can also contact Dennis Davis. We’d like a good turn out for the tournament.
THANKS!
Jackie

JOKES, PICS AND INTERESTING FACTS

JOKE OF THE MONTH:
John and David were both patients in a mental hospital. One day while they were walking pass the hospital swimming pool, John suddenly dove into the deep end. He sunk to the bottom and stayed there. David promptly jumped in and saved him. He swam to the bottom of the pool and pulled John out. The medical director came to know of David's heroic act. He immediately ordered that David be discharged from the mental hospital, as he considered him to be OK. The Doctor said, "We have good news and bad news for you, David! The good news is that we are going to discharge you because you have regained your senses. Since you were able to jump in and save another patient you must be mentally stable. The bad news is that the patient whom you saved hung himself in the bathroom, and died." David replied, "Doctor, he didn't hang himself. I hung him there to dry."

WOULD YOU BELIEVE!!!
A police officer in Chandler, Ariz., noticed a motorcyclist weaving in and out of traffic and tried to pull it over, but the cyclist popped a wheelie and took off at such a high rate of speed -- over 100 mph -- that the officer decided it would be unsafe to chase him. A short time later, another officer saw the motorcyclist and tried to pull him over again. The cyclist ran again, but the second officer was in a better position to give chase. Ross Bidwell, 24, was taken to the hospital, and then charged with drunk driving, driving with a suspended license, failure to yield, reckless driving, and failure to appear in court on a previous DUI charge -- after he careened off of a pickup truck and slammed into a giant cactus beside the road.

ON THIS DATE
On May 3, 1888 - Thomas Edison organized the Edison Phonograph Works.

WEIRD BUT TRUE:
After Elizabeth Russell, 45, and her 13-year-old daughter were arrested in Hartford, Conn., and charged with shoplifting from a Kohl's department store, her husband, Daryll, 47, and son, Jonathan, 19, arrived at the police station to bail them out. However, a quick check revealed that both Daryll and Jonathan had warrants against them for violating probation, and were arrested. Said a police lieutenant, "I don't ever recall having four related people in lockup at the same time."

MORONS:
Decades of armed strife have littered Cambodia with unexploded munitions and ordnance. Authorities warn citizens not to tamper with the devices. Three friends recently spent an evening sharing drinks and exchanging insults at a local cafe in the southeastern province of Svay Rieng. Their companionable arguing continued for hours, until one man pulled out a 25-year-old unexploded antitank mine found in his backyard. He tossed it under the table, and the three men began playing Russian roulette, each tossing down a drink and then stamping on the mine. The other villagers fled in terror. Minutes later, the explosive detonated with a tremendous boom, killing the three men in the bar.
