BUZZARD CLUB OF AMERICA
HOUSTON CHAPTER NEWSLETTER
SEPTEMBER 2009 VOLUME 48 ISSUE 9

FOUNDED OCT 1961- ORGANIZED MAY 1963 FOUNDER - THOMAS E. WALTERS, JR
CHIEF BUZZARD ARLEN DEASON

"Let there be no strangers in the BUZZARD CLUB - Only friends that have yet to meet"

Hello Fellow Buzzards: Well, another tournament has come and gone and I hope everyone had a great time. Next year I should be able to join you. Hopefully, I will start attending the gatherings now since my medical problems have been resolved. I do feel a lot better although I probably don’t look any better, but I can’t do anything about that. Anyway, that’s it for this month, so on with bowling!!!

Meeting Minutes:
Dennis opened the meeting and presented the treasurer’s report which passed. There were no new Buzzard applicatons to vote on. Dennis went over the Annual Tournament in Arkansas and the members present stated they had a good time and had only good things to say about how the tournament was run. Dennis mentioned next year’s tournament will be held in Irving. Nothing else was brought up so the meeting was adjourned.

Attendance: We had 36 Buzzards at the gathering in August, two that did not bowl and one pacer. Our next scheduled gathering is on September 13th @ Del Mar Lanes 3020 Mangum Houston (713) 682-2506. The meeting begins at 1 PM and bowling begins at 2 PM.

Bowling Reminder: There are only two balls per lane during warm-up and not 10 minutes. First and last names of bowlers are to be put on the re-cap sheets each month. Also, make sure the total number of splits and your games are totaled before you sign the sheet at the end of bowling. If you re-qualify, please make a note on the re-cap sheet and you can receive a Buzzard pin for $ 2.00 and be entered for “THE ELLIE DEASON MEMORIAL THREE – IN – A- ROW “roll-off in January. Don’t forget, if you show up to bowl in your birthday month, you pay only $6..

Stupid State Laws
In Ojai, California - it is against the law for a woman to stand within five feet of a bar when she takes a drink in any public establishment serving alcoholic beverages.

Who Could It Be?
In the 17-18th centuries he was employed by the British government to help stop piracy on the high seas, but he turned to piracy himself, was caught and executed in England.

JOKES, PICS AND INTERESTING FACTS

JOKE OF THE MONTH:
A man stumbles up to the only other patron in a bar and asks if he could buy him a drink. "Why of course," comes the reply. The first man then asks, "Where are you from?" "I'm from Ireland," replies the second man. The first man responds, "You don't say, I'm from Ireland too! Let's have another round to Ireland." "Of course," replies the second man. "I'm curious," the first man then asks, "Where in Ireland are you from?" "Dublin," comes the reply. "I can't believe it," says the first man. "I'm from Dublin too! Let's have another drink to Dublin." "Of course," replies the second man. Curiosity again strikes and the first man asks, "What school did you go to?" "Saint Mary's," replies the second man, "I graduated in '62." "This is unbelievable!” the first man says. "I went to Saint Mary's and I graduated in '62, too!" About that time in comes one of the regulars and sits down at the bar. "What's been going on?" he asks the bartender. "Nothing much," replies the bartender. "The O'Kinly twins are drunk again."

WOULD YOU BELIEVE!!!
Timothy Elliott paid $10 for a scratch-off ticket in the Massachusetts "$800 Million Spectacular" lottery game. He probably thought he was pretty lucky when he won $1 million, but it was just the start of his troubles. First, Elliot, 55, who is on probation after robbing two banks, is prohibited from gambling, and his probation terms specifically prohibit buying lottery tickets. Then, publicity over Elliot's case resulted in a summons: his ex-wife alleges he is a deadbeat dad who hasn't paid child support for 28 years. A court hearing has been called to decide whether Elliott can collect when he was prohibited from playing. Lottery officials are anxiously awaiting a decision so they can pay off the convicted felon. "He played the game. He won the game," said state lottery spokesman Dan Rosenfeld. "We would like to see him get his money."
ON THIS DATE
On September 13, 1948 - Margaret Chase Smith was elected to the U.S. Senate and became the first woman to serve in both houses of the U.S. Congress.

WEIRD BUT TRUE:
A 6-foot-long log composed of hundreds of barnacles, locked together, washed ashore near Swansea, Wales. Each of the barnacles uses tentacles for snatching food, and a 6-foot mass of snake-like appendages, writhing simultaneously, terrified local beachgoers. Scientists said goose barnacles usually remain on the ocean floor.

MORONS:
Strength and endurance are two of the most important characteristics that can be passed on to improve the species, so physical challenges between males are frequent. In this case, two drinking buddies found themselves on an overpass 40 feet above a busy freeway in downtown Seattle at 2:45 a.m. It turned out to be the perfect place to determine who had more strength and endurance. Whoever could dangle from the overpass the longest would win! Unfortunately, the winner was too tired from his victory to climb back up, despite help from his 31-year-old friend. The unidentified champion fell smack into the front of a semi-truck barreling down the highway at 60 mph and bounced onto the pavement, where he was hit by a car. The car did not stop. Authorities did not identify the winner of the competition.

FAMOUS QUOTES:
Ellen DeGeneres - "You have to stay in shape. My grandmother, she started walking five miles a day when she was 60. She’s 97 today and we don’t know where the hell she is."
