HOUSTON CHAPTER NEWSLETTER
OCTOBER 2008 VOLUME 47 ISSUE 10

FOUNDED OCT 1961- ORGANIZED MAY 1963 FOUNDER - THOMAS E. WALTERS, JR
CHIEF BUZZARD ARLEN DEASON

"Let there be no strangers in the BUZZARD CLUB - Only friends that have yet to meet"

Hello Fellow Buzzards: I hope everybody made it through Ike okay. That was one scary hurricane. Hopefully we can get everything back to normal soon and put this behind us. Also, the online newsletter has been discontinued due to techincal difficulties. I’m hoping to start it back up in January. That’s really it for this month, so on with bowling!!!

Minutes of Meeting: Dennis opened the meeting and presented the treasurer’s report which passed. Three new member applications were voted on and also passed. As of this writing, the tournament results have not been received. The delay is because some of the handicapping was incorrect and the Montgomery County officials were double checking the entry forms to be sure of the correct handicap. There are unofficial results on the website (www.buzzardclub.org) so if you think the scores and the results are wrong, let Dennis know so he can contact Montgomery County. It was brought up that some members were unable to attend the dinner/dance due to them having to bowl so late. Let Dennis know so they will be able to get a refund. Nothing else was brought up so the meeting was adjourned.

Attendance: We had 46 Buzzards at the gathering in September, five that did not bowl and 4 pacers. Our next scheduled gathering is on October 5, 2008 @ AMF Willow Lanes, 19102 Tomball Pkwy / Houston (281) 955-5900. The meeting begins at 1 PM and bowling begins at 2 PM.

Bowling Reminder: Please keep in mind that there are only two balls per lane during warm-up and not 10 minutes. First and last names of bowlers are to be put on the re-cap sheets each month. Also, make sure the total number of splits and your games are totaled before you sign the sheet at the end of bowling. If you re-qualify, please make a note on the re-cap sheet and you can receive a Buzzard pin for $ 2.00 and be entered for “THE ELLIE DEASON MEMORIAL THREE – IN – A- ROW “roll-off in January. Don’t forget, if you show up to bowl in your birthday month, you pay only $5.

Stupid State Laws
In Bonsall, California it is against the law to read the Sunday paper while sitting in a rocking chair on the front porch while church services are in session.

Who Could It Be?
This Steubenville, Ohio high school dropout became a boxer, stole hubcaps, bootlegged whiskey and worked in a steel mill. He went on to become a world famous actor and singer, and died in 1995.

Note From Jackie: Most of the winter leagues will begin the first week of September 2008. That means it is time to pay for your 2008 – 2009 membership card. Also this means you are to bring your new card in to show me. I must see the new card as soon as possible and before January 2009. If you can’t come to a meeting, I will accept a copy from you. You can either mail or fax it to me. My address is in the newsletter. Call me and I will give you my fax number if you want to handle it that way. For new members, January is the cut off date. If I have not seen your new card by then, you will not qualify for any money won at the monthly gatherings. Your co-operation will be appreciated.
Jackie

Sad News: Our condolenses go out to the family of Jo Roznovsky, known by many as “Ma Ma” Jo, who passed away on August 21st. Jo cooked in many bowling centers in the Houston area but known more at Del Mar. She will be truly mssed. Also, keep your thoughts and prayers for Carl Sontag and Bob King Sr. as they battle cancer.

JOKES, PICS AND INTERESTING FACTS

JOKE OF THE MONTH:
One morning, a woman and her baby were taking a bus. As she entered the bus the driver says "Wow that is one ugly baby." The woman was deeply hurt. She continued to get on to the bus and found a seat next to an elderly man. The man asked her, "What's wrong? You look mad." She replied, "I am. That bus driver just insulted me." "You shouldn't take that from him," the man replied. "He's a public worker and should give you respect. If I was you I would take his badge number and report him." "You're right sir, I think I will report him." The elderly man says, "You go on up there and get his badge number. I'll hold your monkey for you."

WOULD YOU BELIEVE!!!
Bruce Burger, 50, of Lenore City, Tenn., was vacationing in Florida and went out for a round on the Lake Venice Golf Course. On the sixth hole he ended up in a water hazard, and reached in to retrieve his ball when something reached back from the water. "Help! Help! I've been bitten by a gator!" he screamed, witnesses say. Sure enough, an 11-footer had clamped on to his right arm and was pulling him in. He beat the beast with his free hand and escaped. The pond at the sixth hole even has a "Beware of Alligator" sign. "If your ball goes down there, you let it go," said a regular at the course. "Unfortunately, that's part of Florida," said golf course Manager Rod Parry.

ON THIS DATE
On October 5, 1892, The Dalton gang was nearly wiped out while attempting to rob two banks simultaneously in Coffeyville, Kansas. Four members of the gang and four citizens were killed. The only survivor of the gang, Emmett Dawson, was sentenced to life after surviving his wounds.

WEIRD BUT TRUE:
When Michael Moylan, 45, of Port St. Lucie, Fla., awoke with a terrible headache, his wife drove him to the emergency room. Doctors quickly diagnosed the cause: he had been shot in the head. By the time deputies arrived at the hospital, April Moylan had gone home; officers got a search warrant for the house and found the gun, as well as bloody rags. Neither she nor Michael is allowed to own a gun, since both are felons, but April, 39, admitted "accidentally" shooting her husband. April was arrested on charges of a felon in possession of a firearm, and it wasn't until Michael tried to bail her out that he discovered she had let their business collapse, running them out of money. After being released from the hospital with the bullet still lodged in his head, Michael said he confronted April, and she admitted she shot him on purpose, so he banished her to the couch for the night. But when she begged him to let her sleep with him, he gave in. Investigators upgraded the charges to attempted murder, alleging she tried to kill him to cover up the business collapse.

MORONS:
In South Carolina, a man walked into a local police station, dropped a bag of cocaine on the counter, informed the desk sergeant that it was substandard cut, and asked that the person who sold it to him be arrested immediately.

PREDICTION FROM THE PAST:
"This 'telephone' has too many shortcomings to be seriously considered as a means of communication. The device is inherently of no value to us." -- Western Union internal memo, 1876.
